Benji is a mixed breed dog. It happens to be a crossbreed between a miniature poodle, a cocker spaniel and a tiny poodle. The original Benji was a stray dog adopted by a Burbank animal shelter in California. This dog became famous after starring in a few movies by Joe Camp. The name Benji is also being given by the director for his movies. In the films, the dog Benji possesses an extremely uncanny sharpness that makes him the savior of many lives. After that, the term Benji dogs came to be associated with tiny unkempt mixed breed of dogs.

A Benji dog is the one with brown soulful eyes, small in size and fiercely loyal. A benji dog is said to possess a big heart and is also brave. The only problem with its appearance seems to be the fact that it is scruffy looking. Joe Camp, the director of all Benji movies personally is of the opinion that there might be genes of Tibetan Terriers in the Benji dogs. The theory that the dog has got genes of a spaniel is evident from the fact that it spreads across the floor in the form of a bear rug with the legs at her back spread out behind. The original Benji has procreated two sons who have also worked in films.

Many people believe that Benji is a fictional character created by Joe Camp for his films released between 1974 and 2000. The messy looking Benjis somehow look cute with their careless appeal. The brown eyes, black ears and a muzzle, which is also black, have created quite an impact on the viewers. This dog is also extremely intelligent as it was trained for the movies by Frank Inn. Benji has also appeared in television serials. This little cross between poodle, spaniel and terrier has charmed people across ages.
