There are ways to give your hamster a good bath safely; you can consult a vet if you do not know how to go about it. The hamster looks cute, but can get dirty when not bathed over a long time and start smelling making your room smell too. However, there are several dangers associated with bathing your hamster if not done the proper way. Make sure you are careful if you want to bathe it.

There is no need to bathe the hamster frequently. It is better to clean the cage frequently, so that it does not emit a foul smell. You can also try giving your hamster a sand bath with some chinchilla sand placed in a bowl in the cage. The hamster can use the sand bowl as a litter box.

Bathing a hamster is absolutely essential when there is something toxic or sticky attached to its fur. When you are bathing the hamster, fill a bowl with some lukewarm water. Now start getting the hamster wet carefully and softly; making sure that the water does not touch its face area. If the dirt is not going with mere water, you can use a bit of mild baby shampoo to do away with the grime and dirt. After the washing, pat the hamster really dry with a towel. Make it sit on a towel and rub it gently. Never use a hairdryer on the poor, delicate animal. It is natural that the hamster will be annoyed after a bath; just give it a seed or a nut to nibble at and put it gently back in its cage, so that it goes off to sleep. Remember, it is not a good idea to bathe hamsters on cold days as they are prone to catching chills. Try bathing them only on the warmer days.
