A food chain is referred to the process describing energy flow via an ecosystem, when one animal consumes another plant or an animal. In simpler terms, a food chain denotes which animal eats which particular animal in an ecosystem. The animals can be preys or predators depending on whether they are eaten or whether they eat another animal or plant, and many times you will find that they are both.

Plants have microscopic algae and capture the sun's light energy to transform it into biomass. These plants provide food for smaller invertebrates, which become the food of reptiles, amphibians and other predators. Algae and zooplankton is consumed in large amounts by frogs and salamanders; snakes and turtles, as well as other predators feed on the frogs and salamanders. Snakes also eat rats, insects, worms and rodents on land. The snakes on the other hand are feasted upon by raccoons, hawks, and foxes.

The food cycle of a painted turtle as a reptile is very interesting. In its early life, a painted turtle is usually carnivorous and eats tadpoles, the eggs of amphibians, aquatic insects, and snails. With age these turtles feed on large amounts of vegetation and become more of herbivores. The Galapagos tortoises are herbivores as they are known to feed only on plants. The painted turtles are known to feast on dead animals and carrion. A painted turtle at different stages of life acts as a carnivore, herbivore and a scavenger.

The turtles can be an important part of the predators' diet. Animals like foxes, wading birds, raccoons, and skunks prey on the turtles. The reptiles play a significant role in maintaining an ecological balance in the earth by balancing the food chain. Reptiles provide food for other animals and also help to keep the population of insects in check.
